An advisory committee reviewing the Charles D. Turner Correctional Center urged Trousdale County commissioners to seek contractual changes that would give the county leverage to enforce safety and reporting standards before the Tennessee Department of Corrections (TDOC) contract renews.
Mark Beeler, a member of the advisory committee, told the commission the group has been meeting since last September to review the existing contracts among TDOC, the county and CoreCivic. "We basically just accepted the contract," Beeler said, adding the committee's suggestions are a "jumping-off" point to put teeth into future agreements and to improve safety for residents and staff.
The committee recommended inserting provisions that identify breaches and allow the county to withhold funds, assess fines or pursue remedies that are not available under the current arrangement, Beeler said. He told commissioners the state contract with TDOC typically renews around July 1 and advised the county attorney to expect a renewal draft soon.
