Benton City council approves proclamations on civility and the U.S. semi‑quincentennial

Benton City Council on Feb. 3 adopted two ceremonial proclamations: one endorsing civility and respect for public servants, and another encouraging residents to participate in the United States semi‑quincentennial commemoration on July 4, 2026.
Mayor Lehi Burton read a proclamation emphasizing civility, respect and support for elected officials, city staff and volunteers and urged residents to engage in constructive civic processes. The council moved, seconded and approved the proclamation by voice vote.
Council also read a proclamation recognizing the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and encouraging community service and local commemorations during the celebratory year; that proclamation also passed on a motion and voice vote.
Both proclamations are ceremonial and do not create obligations or change city policy; council members framed them as community reminders and opportunities for volunteerism.
