Council members were told the skatepark at one of Benton City’s parks needs substantial structural work to meet safety standards and that a contractor quote to rebuild the structures came in at roughly $90,000.
Chair told the council the city had solicited a quote to bring the skatepark into compliance. “We have a quote for it's just shy of $90,000 to rebuild it and bring the structures to compliance,” Chair said, noting the existing layout and exposed hardware present safety and design problems.
Staff and council discussed whether piecemeal repairs or full replacement is the better long-term option. Staff said the site’s design issues and recurring repair costs made replacement more advisable, and that the proposed budget did not include a separate funded contingency large enough to cover the full rebuild without reallocating capital or seeking external grants.
Council members asked staff to return with options for funding the rebuild, including whether the work could be phased across fiscal years, be covered by long-term capital funds, or be matched with grant dollars. No commitment to fund the rebuild was made during the workshop.
Next steps: Staff was asked to prepare a detailed estimate and a financing plan showing fund sources, possible phasing, and any grant opportunities before the council considers appropriation.
