LeMay explains disposal pass‑through and CPI adjustments to Cosmopolis council; contract runs through 2027

Roger Swalander, district manager for LeMay, briefed the Cosmopolis City Council on Nov. 20 about how the company's contract rates are adjusted each year.
Swalander said the contract contains two components: (1) a straight pass‑through of the disposal rate per ton and (2) a CPI‑based annual adjustment. "When the rate of disposal of the transfer station goes up, a percentage of that is passed on in the rates — a straight pass‑through," he said. "The other part is the CPI. This year we adjusted 80% of that CPI number." He added the disposal component for this cycle increased from about $127.69 to $130.49 per ton (as presented).
Council members asked whether residential service rates include recycling; Swalander confirmed recycling is included in the residential price. He told the council the current contract term extends through 2027 and said LeMay is open to negotiation before the renewal or extension period.
The council did not take action on the contract at the meeting; members said they expect to review the matter and consider competitive bidding when the contract comes up for renewal.
