Lake Stevens Mayor Gailey announces resignation, effective April 13; council to appoint successor

Mayor Gailey announced at the March 24 City Council meeting that he and his family will relocate out of state and that he will tender his resignation effective April 13.
"We have made it a family decision... I will be tendering a resignation from being the mayor of Lake Stevens, and it will be effective April 13," Gailey said, describing it as a difficult personal decision.
He outlined the process the council will use to fill the vacancy: staff will solicit applications from community members, council will interview candidates and then appoint a successor who will serve the remainder of the term through December 2027. Gailey named Councilmember Angie Jorstad as mayor pro tem to run meetings in the interim.
Council members offered congratulations and thanks for the mayor’s service and said they respected his decision. Several council members praised Gailey’s fundraising and leadership at conferences and credited him with securing grant dollars and guiding local projects such as the mill and Cove Park improvements.
Gailey said he will continue his duties through April 12 and will assist in transition planning for the newly seated mayor.
