Liberty Lake proclaims March 2026 Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month; local advocates urge ongoing attention

The City of Liberty Lake voted March 17 to proclaim March 2026 as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, and local advocates used the occasion to call for sustained community attention and accessible services.
Kyle Dixon read the proclamation on behalf of the city; the council then unanimously voted to support it. "We proclaim for the second consecutive year, March 2026, as developmental disabilities awareness month in the City of Liberty Lake," the proclamation reads.
Deb Fink, director of Building Ohana and a longtime local advocate, thanked the council and described small‑scale, practical ways residents can pay attention to accessibility and inclusion. "In a small city like ours, that kind of seeing can happen easily in our parks, on our trails and stores," Fink said. She urged residents to learn about and contact local organizations such as the Arc of Spokane, Northwest Autism Center, Isaac Foundation, and Side by Side for information and support.
Fink described awareness month not as a single event but as an opportunity for everyday attention and changes in community habits that reduce barriers. Council members invited Fink and representatives to pose for a proclamation photo and encouraged continued collaboration between staff and local nonprofits.
The motion to support the proclamation passed without objection.
