Authority endorses state bills on manufacturer responsibility, single-use vapes and plastic mitigation

"Manufacturers basically say, 'just bring it to your solid waste facility,' which increases our costs without responsibility for the producer," Ted said, urging a support position on AB2462. The board moved, seconded and voted unanimously to support the bill.
The board also voted to support AB762, which staff described as restricting single-use disposable vapes because their embedded batteries and liquids create handling and hazardous-waste challenges in schools and at collection sites. Board members framed that measure as a practical response to disposal and safety problems encountered by schools and facilities.
Finally, staff recommended support for SB1180, which encourages planning among agencies to prepare for distribution of funds authorized by SB54 (a product-stewardship framework that establishes a large multiyear fund). Ted said the planning and coordination are intended to help rural and disadvantaged communities access funds efficiently when they become available. Commissioners approved support positions by unanimous voice vote.
The authority's support positions will be transmitted as formal letters, and staff said they will monitor hearings and regulatory developments and report back to the board.
