The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is on site at a mail-related property in Cosmopolis, city officials said, and will work with the property owner and state Ecology on a response plan. City leaders told the council on Sept. 18 that the city’s role is limited to receiving information and relaying updates to residents.
Clerk Bora said, "EPA is on-site. They will be working through a plan with the owners on exactly how to proceed going forward," and that updates will likely come directly from EPA and Ecology. The mayor said the city hopes to host a public briefing at the next council meeting in early October to present what the agencies report.
A resident asked whether safety systems such as fire alarms would function while power is off at the site. The mayor said city staff and emergency-management partners will follow up and address such safety questions at the planned briefing.
The council emphasized it will pass along official announcements from EPA and Ecology to Cosmopolis residents rather than issuing independent technical findings. The city advised residents to await agency guidance and to bring questions to the upcoming public update.
