Auburndale schedules April mock-accident with local responders; parents will receive opt-out forms

Auburndale School District administrators described plans for a large-scale mock-accident exercise set for April 8 that will bring local emergency responders into school to simulate real-world accident response and then debrief with students.
Presenter (S9) told the board the exercise will begin around 10:45 a.m. and include Auburndale Fire Department, EMS and, weather permitting, a Flight for Life helicopter. The simulation will involve vehicles and UTVs, use makeup and staged victims excused from class for participation, include a lunch break for student actors, and conclude with a round-table discussion with responders and family members so students can hear about emergency roles and safety perspectives.
"We're gonna bring the chopper in... and then after the mock accident... we'll do a round table exercise to talk about how these individuals function," Presenter (S9) said, describing agency involvement and the exercise’s learning goals. S9 emphasized counseling and pupil services will be on standby and that parents will receive permission slips with an opt-out option.
The district indicated the exercise is intended both to give students an immersive learning opportunity about emergency response and to give local EMS and businesses a training opportunity. S9 said the district had reached out to local media and expected coverage, and noted logistics for seating and alternate bleachers for parents who wish to observe.
Board members asked about access for parents and accommodations; the administration said they would provide designated viewing space and coordinate bleacher placement and blankets if students will view from outdoor slopes. The administration also stressed that the Flight for Life helicopter is contingent on weather and that the coroner and a local funeral home will be included in the scenario to help replicate emergency procedures.
Next steps: administration will distribute permission slips and social-media information to families, confirm vendor and agency participation, and finalize safety and counseling plans before April 8.
