The Albia City Council met on June 7 and handled a slate of ordinances, budget actions and routine approvals.
The council adopted Ordinance #897 (amending Chapter 69.08) to prohibit parking on South A Street from 4th Ave W to 5th Ave W on either side of the crest of the hill during school hours. The second reading was approved, the third reading waived, and the ordinance was adopted on a 5-1 vote; Scott Kelly voted no.
Council approved the first reading of Ordinance #898, which revises rules on over-width vehicle parking; that first reading passed unanimously.
On budget items, the council passed resolutions adopting FY 2021 and FY 2022 budget amendments; both motions carried with unanimous 6-0 votes.
Other actions approved included a tax-exemption application from HMH Storage for a new building (6-0); renewal of beer and liquor permits for the White Buffalo and Brick Street establishments (6-0); and assessment of mowing costs for 14 properties to the Monroe County Treasurer for collection as property tax (6-0). The council also approved placement of a handicap parking space adjacent to CD Accounting on Benton Ave and Hwy 5 (westbound side) after a request citing pedestrian safety.
The mayor informed the council of the appointment of Donna Coady to the Albia Housing Board. The council discussed surveillance options for the brush dump but took no action. The City Attorney reported he has not heard from the railroad on crossing repairs and is awaiting a property-owner signature on a hotel ownership matter. The police chief reported shots fired at a pickup truck and noted the department’s upcoming Secret Santa fundraiser at the Rodder’s Car Show. The Street Commissioner reported that traffic-line painting is in progress; Councilmember Mobley said the community pool is open and looks good.
