Carlsbad Recreation Services Manager Mick Calarco to retire; recruitment under way

Director Lancaster told the Parks and Recreation Commission on Nov. 18 that Recreation Services Manager Mick Calarco will retire at the end of the year after more than 21 years with the City of Carlsbad. Lancaster thanked Calarco for his service and described Calarco’s work as integral to the department’s projects and programs.
Lancaster said the city conducted a nationwide recruitment, received more than 100 applications, screened 53 and scheduled first-round interviews with eight candidates (two internal and six external). He said first-round interviews were scheduled to begin the day after the meeting and that departmental interviews and orientation steps would follow; staff cautioned there will be some ramp-up time whether the hire is internal or external.
Calarco spoke briefly and thanked the commission for support over the years. Lancaster said he and staff will provide interim coverage and requested commissioners’ patience during the transition.
No formal personnel action was taken during the meeting; the recruitment process will proceed through scheduled interviews and subsequent departmental steps.
