Patrice Smirdu, a volunteer with the Carlsbad Community Gardens Collaborative, updated the Parks and Recreation Commission on Nov. 18 about outreach, education and operations at the city’s community gardens.
Smirdu said the collaborative worked with the library on the Grow Your Garden speaker series, staffed booths at Earth Day and the Carlsbad Farmers Market where volunteers handed out roughly 500 pollinator seed packets, and donated about 1,500 seed packets to library seed libraries. The group established a new Monarch Waystation at Pine Garden and expects to add similar habitat at two other gardens. She said roughly 900 third-graders visited garden education programs this year.
Smirdu noted there are about 474 people on the community garden waiting list and volunteers plan to conduct a short survey to verify continued interest and residency and to reprioritize or remove those no longer eligible or interested.
The presentation was part of the allotted public-comment period; commissioners thanked Smirdu for the update and holiday wishes.
