A motion was made and seconded to appoint Todd Grimes as Covington County's safety coordinator; the motion passed by voice vote. Commissioners who moved and seconded the motion noted that no immediate increase in compensation would be provided because of retirement payment limits unless state law changes.
Todd Grimes addressed the commission and described previous experience serving as a safety coordinator while in the military and conducting accident reconstructions and investigations. "Basically, most of reason, because I want to find the truth," Grimes said, adding he intends to conduct fair and impartial investigations regardless of rank or title.
The commission asked that Grimes complete required certification classes and document qualifications. No salary adjustment was approved at the meeting.
Next steps: Grimes will schedule required training and begin in the safety coordinator role; staff will follow applicable retirement-pay rules and revisit compensation only if legal constraints change.
