Christian Wallace, CEO of the Grossmont Healthcare District, updated the El Cajon City Council on the district’s community health strategy, programming and capital plans.
Wallace said the district is focusing on recurring education and wellness programs — for example, weekly and monthly classes such as chair yoga and "Drums Alive," a fourth‑Wednesday "Wellness Wednesday" speaker series, and a health‑and‑wellness library the district makes available to residents. "The health and wellness library is the only one in San Diego County... it's a gem for East San Diego County," Wallace said.
He described a mobile outreach version of the library to bring resources to seniors and rural communities, and outlined a rural discharge program launched with County partners that offers weekly nurse follow‑ups and home‑based safety checks. Wallace said readmission rates dropped markedly among program participants: from about 13.9% for those who opted out to 4% for early participants and currently down to about 1% among those who opt in.
Wallace also summarized workforce development partnerships and a yearlong study with East County Economic Development Council to align employer needs with training pipelines. He closed by describing a major capital project: a state‑of‑the‑art neurosciences center at Sharp Grossmont Hospital, with roughly 16 ICU and 16 PCU beds and an estimated ribbon cutting around May 2025.
Council members praised the district’s partnerships and expressed interest in local collaboration; the city manager said staff is working on a proposal to bring district services into El Cajon through parks and recreation.
