Council adopts Traffic Safety and Mobility Commission work plan focused on school-area safety

Nathan Schmidt, Carlsbad's transportation and planning mobility manager, presented the Traffic Safety and Mobility Commission's work plan for fiscal year 2024–25, and asked the council to adopt a resolution approving the plan. Schmidt said the commission will review staff recommendations on capital projects, traffic signal programming, the sustainable mobility plan and, newly added, parking master plans.
Commissioner Peter Cole summarized commission priorities and praised staff work. He noted the commission's recent decision to revise the Tyler Street Complete Street Plan on fiscal grounds and urged realistic cost estimates earlier in project development. Cole and Schmidt described data-driven responses to speeding, including signal timing changes and a plan to pilot flashing yellow left-turn operations at selected intersections.
Councilmembers thanked commissioners and staff for the transparency the work plan provides. The council voted unanimously to adopt the resolution approving the Traffic Safety and Mobility Commission work plan for FY24-25.
The adopted work plan directs the commission to continue quarterly reporting to council and to focus on mobility around school sites, safe routes to school planning, and quarterly traffic reports from police.
