Local resident urges changes to board public-comment policy and transparency on solicitor contract

During the meeting's second public-comment period, Carmina Taylor (voice S19) criticized recent revisions to board policy 903 governing public comment and said an electronic form and changes to the presiding officer's powers were not adequately explained to the community. "When you think about where we are 77 years [after the school code] ... you have to ask yourselves, where are you today?" Taylor said, calling for more transparent governance and suggesting the district could be a case study for state code changes.
Taylor also said she had called around and that community members were unaware of the new solicitor contract recently added to board materials. She asked the board to provide clearer access to policy committee materials and attachments and expressed frustration at being limited to a three-minute comment. "Whatever decision you make on April 6, it'll be an indictment on you," she said.
Board members stated the time limit policy and noted the board would follow up via boarddocs when appropriate; no immediate board action was taken in response to her comments.
