The San Diego City Council voted to approve a street‑name change naming an existing unnamed public alley in the Cabrillo Heights neighborhood “Itai Way.” Staff said the petition was circulated to 85 affected property owners or tenants, received 25 signatures (29% support) and exceeded the 25% minimum threshold required under municipal code for council action when 100% support is not achieved.
Staff said the alley (established in 1960) is 26 feet wide and approximately 0.4 miles long and that the naming was determined to be categorically exempt from CEQA under existing‑facilities and accessory‑structure exemptions. Transportation staff confirmed that installation of street signs would be done by the city’s street division at no charge to applicants and funded from the general fund.
Residents who live on the alley spoke in favor, citing emergency response and delivery navigation issues. Councilmember Von Wilpert moved the recommendation and Councilmember Campbell seconded; the council approved the name change unanimously (8‑0) with Councilmember Kempio absent. Affected property owners will have the option to request an address change.
