Board recognizes student journalists and national‑placing cheer team

The Putnam County School Board spent part of its March 24 meeting recognizing student achievements: the Interlarkin Junior‑Senior High competitive cheer program and a group of student journalists from James A. Long’s after‑school program.

Coach Cammy, who identified herself as the teams’ coach, detailed recent competitive results and fundraising efforts, noting the program’s progression: regional finishes in 2023 and 2024, a regional championship in 2025, third in the state and a fifth‑place finish at nationals in the most recent national semifinals. "We made it through the semifinals and finished fifth in the in the country," Coach Cammy said, and she thanked assistant coaches and community supporters for fundraising to cover travel and competition costs.

Brooke Carpenter, site coordinator for James A. Long’s 21st‑century after‑school program, introduced students participating in the Lion Pride Press. Shay Freeman, the program’s faculty advisor, described the group as student journalists and photographers producing a monthly publication and a podcast; she said the program gives students a platform to tell school stories and develop journalism skills.

Board members congratulated the students and coaches, praised student behavior during the meeting, and encouraged community support for events such as the county fair and graduation activities. The superintendent and board also highlighted upcoming community engagement opportunities and recognized partners who support student activities.
