Summary
District facilities staff reported steady progress on the high school renovation and stadium at the March 9 work session, including a rooftop chiller installation, generator hookups and a stadium completion target of July; several change orders and summer phasing were outlined and will be presented for approval next week.
Cornwall-Lebanon School Board administrators told the board on March 9 that the district's high school renovation and stadium projects are moving forward on a multi-phase schedule, with the goal of having the stadium ready for summer activities and a rooftop chiller brought online by the end of the month.
Dan Berglie, who presented the semiannual buildings and grounds report, said the new chiller was lifted onto the high school roof over the winter and the contractors are completing a final punch list with Moore Engineering. "We hope to have that chiller started up and running by the end of the month," Berglie said.
Berglie described ongoing phased construction at the high school. Phase 1 work (library, 100 hallway, science rooms) is being wrapped up; phase 2 (band and science hallways) began at Christmas; auditorium work started the day of the meeting and is part of phase 3; and phase 4 (kitchen and greenhouse demo) is slated to begin May 1, with the district aiming to reopen that work area by the next school year. He warned that moving the counseling and nurse's offices was postponed to the following summer to avoid overworking crews and to preserve classroom continuity.
The presentation also addressed mechanical and life-safety systems. Berglie said the district installed a new 1,000-gallon diesel tank for the standby generator after natural gas piping could not be extended to the unit. The generator's switchgear is being installed, and once complete the generator will power emergency lighting, kitchen freezers and refrigerators, networked lighting, portions of HVAC and the main office. "We're gonna also have a boiler hooked up to it," Berglie said, noting the upgrade extends the generator's capabilities beyond prior configurations.
On the stadium site, Berglie described installation of a gas meter, DOAS units for the field house, a new handicap ramp and an installed scoreboard that is not yet powered. He said some pole-vault pit accommodations and temporary turf solutions were used to keep spring athletes from mud. The district expects blacktopping at the stadium to be completed in May and indicated the stadium should be "completed by July," a schedule Berglie said would allow use for spring practices and events and readiness for graduation preparations.
Administrators repeatedly emphasized that work is weather-dependent and that summer months will concentrate roofing repairs, heavy equipment access and trenching. Board Chair Mr. Zug thanked staff for the detailed report and noted the district will offer board tours for directors who want closer site inspection.
The board did not vote on capital or change-order items during the work session; administrators said the specific contract change orders and ratifications discussed will appear on next week's consent or action agenda for formal approval.
