Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson led a celebration of transgender voices at Hostos on Transgender Day of Visibility, where speakers called for continued, year‑round visibility and noted campus support funded in part by a city council grant.
A Hostos presenter said the college’s council — a group of faculty and staff — is working with a city‑council grant “to promote LGBT life on campus,” and that the group had invited Destination Tomorrow to represent members of the trans community. Reporter Ashley De Leon, who covered the event for BronxNet, said Rachel highlighted the team of organizers and community partners who helped mount the program.
Gibson framed visibility as both empowering and enduring. “As long as you see us, you know we exist,” she said, urging ongoing public support for transgender students, staff and faculty. She added that visibility helps younger people watching and challenges those who have questions or opposition to recognize the community’s presence.
Speakers and attendees described the gathering as a personal celebration of identity and resilience. The event combined short remarks from community leaders, expressions of solidarity, and acknowledgements of campus and city support for LGBTQ+ life.
