Board approves naming Westmore track for longtime coach Ron DiMaggio

The Jefferson Union High School District board voted to name the Westmore High School track the Ron DiMaggio track after trustees read a resolution citing Coach DiMaggio’s decades of service and program achievements.

Trustee Presta introduced the resolution (Res. 2025‑2026/13), outlining a record of long-term coaching and program success, including numerous league championships and state qualifiers. Presta said the nomination met the district’s facility-naming criteria and reflected broad support from students, alumni, parents and staff.

Multiple trustees spoke in favor before a motion to adopt the resolution was made and seconded. Trustee comments praised DiMaggio’s mentorship, inclusiveness and long-lasting impact on students. Trustee Gallegos said the nomination drew “generations of stories” about the coach’s influence; several trustees described personal connections through family members or former athletes.

Coach Ron DiMaggio addressed the board after the vote, calling the honor “the greatest” for a track coach and reflecting on a long career that began in 1978. “To know that my program means a lot to a lot of people,” he said, “that is more than the wins.” He thanked former athletes and family members present.

The board approved the resolution by voice vote. The board president invited DiMaggio to receive the resolution and posed for a group photograph with trustees following the meeting.

The district directed the superintendent or designee to implement the naming, including appropriate signage and recognition.

Next steps: the district will finalize the paperwork and signage as directed by the resolution.
