Planning staff previews Caltrans workshop, updates on housing and hotel projects and staffing

Staff presented updates on a Caltrans-funded downtown sustainable transportation workshop and several development proposals, and informed the committee about an incoming planning director.

A staff member (Speaker 4) said the city will hold a public workshop for a downtown sustainable transportation grant (Thursday, 3–7 p.m.) to gather feedback on pedestrian mobility and safety along a downtown corridor. The staff member said the active-transportation plan (ATP) has been presented to the planning commission and will return to the city council for input, with final adoption expected in early 2025.

Staff also reported that the city council approved a residential project of 12 townhomes and 12 apartments at a vacant parcel at Healdsburg and Murphy; the project will next go to the design review board for final permitting that focuses on building design, landscaping and tree-removal plans. Two hotel projects (the Barlow Hotel and Sebastopol Hotel) remain under review pending funding and interest-rate conditions.

The staff member said the city expects to hire a planning director — reclassified as community development director with added economic-development responsibilities — in the coming month.

Staff also updated the committee on an enforcement action related to a contested monument sign and said the building official had issued a compliance letter; further enforcement could include fines or legal action if the sign remains out of compliance.

The committee noted these items for future agendas and then moved on to outstanding items including signage and site inventory work.
