Gardner committee interviews multiple mayoral appointees to Council on Aging and bandstand committee

The Gardner City Appointments Committee interviewed six mayoral appointees and discussed scheduling their confirmations and oaths. Candidates Stanley J. Lusko, Cheryl Howells, Mary Shaffer, Denise Merriam and others described volunteer and professional experience supporting senior services and city events, and committee members praised their qualifications.
Committee members front-loaded the meeting with an introduction of Stanley J. Lusko, who identified himself as a lifelong Gardner resident and a volunteer at the senior center. Lusko said, “I've been in the senior center for 3 years now... I hope to be able to expand on that for them or to help them in their projects.” Members thanked him for his willingness to serve.
The committee then considered Christy Livingston (who described earning a gerontology certificate from Clark University and 15 years of experience at Haywood Wakefield Commons), Cheryl Howells (a retired registered nurse who said she has volunteered at the senior center for nine years and served on its board), and Mary Shaffer (who said she has been active with the senior center for about seven years and worked for the local post office for nearly 40 years). Denise Merriam, nominated to the bandstand committee, said she is retired from the Gardner Department of Public Works and has served on the bandstand committee for six to seven years; members praised the committee's work assembling sponsors and programming at Monument Park.
The chair told nominees that, if the committee confirms appointments at a future meeting and the full council votes to confirm, the mayor's office or the clerk will schedule an oath at the full council meeting. Staff said certificates of confirmation are attached to the packet for those already confirmed by the council but not yet sworn in.
Several items were left on the calendar for the next appointments meeting (scheduled for April 14) because the mayor's write-ups or packet entries needed correction or additional documentation before final consideration.
