Recreation supervisor reviews summer camp, after‑school and new "kids paint night"

Anna Casillas, a recreation supervisor for the City of San Gabriel, presented a recap of the department’s youth programming at the Community Services Commission meeting.
Casillas said the department offered a 10‑week summer camp for children ages 5–12, with regular hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and optional extended hours for an additional fee. Camp weeks included a weekly swimming session, STEAM activities and field trips such as the Aquarium of the Pacific and Adventure City.
“We offered 10 weeks of summer camp just like always,” Casillas said. She described themed weeks (including a career week that brought in bakers, actors, a sports announcer and public safety presenters) and a final talent show staged at the Mission Playhouse.
Casillas also summarized after‑school programming for first through fifth grades at Coolidge, McKinley, Wilson and Washington elementary schools and highlighted youth sports hosted at Jefferson Middle School. The department runs tryouts and fields JV and varsity teams in flag football, volleyball, basketball and soccer.
The presentation introduced a new offering, "kids paint night," held in the community recreation center dance room. “This cost $10 per person, and we had 17 kids enrolled,” Casillas said, adding staff plan another session in December.
The commission asked about STEAM activities and outreach to secure guest presenters; Casillas said staff used early calls and partnerships (including the San Gabriel Public Library) and had parent volunteers among guest presenters.
The department will continue monthly newsletters and program refinements next year, Casillas said. Commissioners praised the scope of activities and suggested involving older‑adult art participants as mentors at future paint nights.
