Canyon Lake accepts grant-funded water-recycling fire-training trailer to cut training water use

The Canyon Lake Fire Department will receive a grant-funded water-recycling training trailer that allows firefighters to pump, flow and reclaim training water rather than discharging large volumes during drills.
Fire Chief Jeff Latendres told the council the trailer is valued at about $120,000 and was funded through a Metropolitan Water District program administered locally by Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District (EVMWD). The trailer recirculates water used in fire-flow drills, reducing the amount drawn from hydrants and discharged to the environment. Chief Latendres said it could deliver about 1,000 gallons per minute during operations and would allow more centrally located training at the fire station even though the station lacks an on-site hydrant.
The grant requires the city to maintain the trailer and report estimated water savings, which will be verified with flow meters. EVMWD and other regional partners funded the unit through a larger Metropolitan Water District initiative; the city’s responsibility is routine maintenance and quarterly reporting of gallons saved.
The council adopted resolution 2026-13 approving the reimbursement agreement with EVMWD and authorized the city manager to execute documents to finalize the grant acceptance.
