The San Gabriel Planning Commission voted 4‑0 to adopt a resolution approving planning case CUP25‑015, allowing on‑site sale and consumption of beer and wine at Sunmo Street Food, 534 East Valley Boulevard, Unit 1, in Valley Plaza.
Staff planner Christine summarized the application and recommended conditions of approval, saying the business would operate under a Type 41 Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control license and that "beer and wine should only be served in conjunction with food and not sold separately." She told commissioners the project is exempt from further CEQA review under the Class 1 (existing facilities) exemption and that mailed notices went to property owners and tenants within 500 feet.
The San Gabriel Police Department reviewed the proposal and provided conditions intended to address public‑safety concerns, including installation of an additional surveillance camera near the cashier and a requirement that management notify the police department immediately of any crimes occurring at the location; staff added that the police could request re‑evaluation of the conditional use permit if public‑safety issues arise.
No members of the public signed up to speak during the public‑hearing portion. A commissioner moved to approve the staff recommendation, the motion was seconded, and the secretary called the roll. The secretary announced the vote as four affirmative votes and the motion passed.
The permit allows on‑site beer and wine only (no distilled spirits) and keeps the restaurant’s current hours of operation unchanged. The commission did not attach any additional entertainment or occupancy changes to the approval.
The planning commission’s action was procedural; next steps are administrative: the applicant will pursue the required ABC licensing with the state and must comply with the conditions of approval enforced by the city and the police department.
