Commission weighs teen-targeted social media, bike event and March Lantern Festival

Summary
Commissioners and youth ambassadors urged targeted social media and event design to attract teenagers; staff outlined a timeline for a sustainable-transportation/bike event after July 1 and confirmed the Lantern Festival for March 21–22 co-hosted by World Journal of Los Angeles.
At the Community Services Commission meeting, several youth ambassadors and commissioners urged staff to tailor outreach and event content to attract teenagers.
Youth participants suggested more visual, trend-driven content and "Instagrammable" photo opportunities. One youth said social posts should be "more comedic, more trendy" and recommended either a second city account or youth-focused content to avoid mixing announcements with general city business. Staff explained the public information officer ‘‘posts once a day’’ and that more targeted content creation would be required to engage younger audiences.
Commissioners discussed larger ideas to attract teens to winter programming, including temporary attractions for the city’s fiftieth-anniversary tree lighting (synthetic ice rink, snow slide) and more permanent options such as a community rink or roller facility run by a private vendor. Staff cautioned these ideas would require budget requests during the next fiscal-year planning cycle.
On a separate item, commissioners discussed a bike/sustainable-transportation event to address student safety near Jefferson Middle School and to promote active transportation; staff said interdepartmental discussions will begin late this month and the earliest council review is targeted for June, with the event likely to take place after the July 1 start of the next fiscal year.
Staff also provided an update on the Lantern Festival, scheduled for March 21–22 with live performances, street food and a lantern display co-hosted by World Journal of Los Angeles; staff said some lantern pieces are heavy and placement logistics are still being finalized and that more information will come back to the commission in February.
Next steps: staff will coordinate with the public information officer on possible teen-targeted social content, prepare timing and budget options for larger attractions as part of budget season, and return with Lantern Festival placement and logistics in February.
