West Central Area seniors get board approval for May campout on school grounds

Students on the West Central Area senior class asked the school board for permission to hold a senior "camp out" on school grounds and won board approval.
The request came from student organizer Travis Nesman, who told the board organizers had surveyed peers and collected signed interest forms. "We decided that everyone will pay $5 and we'll use it to buy hot dogs, chips and drinks," Nesman said, summarizing the planned food and fundraising approach. He said students would bring tents and games and that organizers had prepared a written permission and behavior form that parents must sign.
The student presentation included a proposed schedule (beginning Friday after school, May 15, and ending before noon Saturday, May 16), chaperone plans and safety rules. Organizers said they had identified at least two chaperones on site and planned a May 1 deadline for collecting permission slips. The written release requires emergency contact information, lists allergies or medications and reminds students the district's drug, alcohol, tobacco and vaping policies apply; presenters said violations could jeopardize graduation participation.
After questions from the board about supervision and field conditions, a board member moved to consider the request and another seconded. The board voted by voice; the chair announced that permission was granted. Chair Milo Nesman noted staff would confirm policy references and logistics.
Next steps: students said they will collect payments and permission slips and deliver them to district staff, and the event organizers will coordinate with district staff on final location (football field or nearby athletic area) based on field conditions.
