Board approves Route 66 centennial, Earth Month, county‑government proclamations; confirms appointments and accepts homeland security grants

The Coconino County Board of Supervisors used a portion of its March 17 meeting to approve a series of proclamations, appointments and grant acceptances.
The board unanimously approved a proclamation recognizing the centennial of Historic Route 66 in Coconino County; Margaret Hanigan read the text and the board noted about 73.5 miles of Route 66 remain inside the county. "Celebrating the centennial of historic Route 66...allows us to honor its legacy," Hanigan read during the proclamation.
The board also unanimously adopted proclamations declaring April 2026 Earth Month (read by Nina Schmidt, Sustainable Building Program Manager) and April 2026 as National County Government Month (read by Deputy County Manager Eric Peterson). Schmidt highlighted county forest restoration, flood mitigation and energy efficiency efforts while Peterson outlined outreach planned for County Government Month.
On personnel actions the board approved appointment of Sheldon Yazzie to a four‑year term on the Indigenous Peoples Advisory Council and confirmed Jennifer Rubin as a superior court judge pro tem for the period March 14–June 30, 2026 after an introduction by Presiding Judge Ted Reed.
The board accepted three subrecipient grants from the Arizona Department of Homeland Security: $4,127 and $8,190 awards for search‑and‑rescue communications headsets (to support helicopter hoist communications and mobile dispatch links) and a $12,000 award for CERT equipment, training and supplies. Sheriff Brad Axland said the headsets would be used in hoist and short haul missions and that the CERT funds would support volunteer equipment and training; the board approved acceptance of the grants unanimously.
All motions noted above were approved by the board during the meeting; staff said event calendars for Route 66 centennial activities and related county celebrations will be posted online and coordinated with cities and community partners.
