The council on Feb. 17 approved an amendment to the Arch Airport‑Sperry Road Precise Road Plan to allow driveway access for a county‑approved Maverick fueling station at Qantas Lane and Arch Airport Road.
Stephanie Ocasio, director of community development, told the council the county had approved the gas station and directed the applicant to pursue the precise‑road amendment through the city because the roadway is jointly adopted by city and county. Staff presented a traffic analysis and a truck‑turning plan; the planning commission recommended approval with the condition that the driveway be configured for STAA trucks.
Several commissioners and members of the public raised safety and sight‑distance concerns at the planning commission hearing. During the council discussion, members asked about sidewalks, crosswalks near nearby Venture Academy and the distance from the Highway 99 on‑ramp. Staff answered that existing crosswalks were at Qantas and that the driveway sits roughly 425 feet east of the intersection.
Council approved the amendment subject to conditions and findings by a 4‑2 vote, with Mayor Fugazi and Council member Villapudua dissenting.
