Board authorizes FY27 Chromebook purchase, districtwide Wi‑Fi upgrade and roof replacement

The Sycamore Community Unit School District 427 Board of Education authorized multiple capital and technology expenditures during its regular meeting.
Directors recommended and the board approved a FY27 Chromebook purchase to replace devices reaching Auto Update Expiration (AUE). The district's technology director explained the replacement cadence: new devices for fifth-and ninth-grade cohorts that then follow students for roughly four years before moving to lower grades; administrators said families may purchase an optional accidental-damage protection plan and that the district is studying whether warranty or different repair arrangements could reduce costs. The director warned of global supply and component price pressures that could raise prices if the purchase is delayed.
The board also approved a districtwide wireless access-point replacement project with a vendor contract totaling approximately $363,347.40; administrators said roughly 50% of that cost will be reimbursed through E-rate funding next summer. Separately, the board awarded the Southeast roof replacement bid and noted the district applied for and will receive a $50,000 facilities maintenance grant to help offset that project.
Board members pressed for additional analysis on warranty options and possible long-term cost-savings, and they asked staff to investigate whether vendors will repair devices on a per-incident basis if the district declines the optional warranty. One board member recommended a cost-benefit analysis of warranty versus out-of-warranty repair costs; the board directed administrators to follow up with detailed comparisons.
Motions to authorize the Chromebook purchase, to approve the wireless access-point project, and to accept the roof bid were each moved, seconded and carried on roll-call votes.
Administrators indicated purchase orders would be issued promptly after approval to lock in pricing and begin manufacturing so deliveries can arrive in July and be ready for the new school year.
