The Sycamore Community Unit School District 427 Board of Education voted to approve a collective bargaining agreement with the Sycamore Education Association through fiscal year 2028.
Board members described the contract as the product of collaborative negotiations completed ahead of schedule and said it is designed to position Sycamore as a destination district as a wave of veteran educators prepares to retire. Chair (board president) said the agreement reflects the board's commitment to students, staff and stakeholders and called it a testament to the teams who worked on negotiations.
Board members who participated in the negotiations thanked the SEA negotiation team and district staff for a collaborative process. One board member noted the agreement was completed three months ahead of schedule and described it as a blueprint for future negotiations. Another member disclosed a potential conflict: she said she was not on the negotiations team and that her spouse is a member of the SEA and would be affected by the pact.
After discussion, a motion to approve the agreement was made, seconded and carried on a roll-call vote. The board invited negotiators and union representatives to come forward to sign the agreement publicly and took a group photo.
The board framed the pact as part of a broader effort to balance fiscal responsibility with competitive staffing, citing recent levy results and anticipating a period of retirements that will require active recruitment and retention strategies. The superintendent and board members said the district will continue monitoring implementation and long-term fiscal impacts as staffing transitions unfold.
The board adjourned the item after the public signing and returned to other agenda business.
