Lawrence police reported an administrative inspection at Gateway Pub (339 Merrimack St.) on Feb. 19 that identified approximately 29 individuals estimated to be 18–20 years old, some of whom were found with alcoholic beverages. Sergeant Lopez read the inspection into the record and described officers stationing at front and rear exits to intercept patrons.
Gateway manager Danielle Mosquito said she reviewed security footage after the incident, confirmed two security officers were on duty that night and described corrective steps including security training, tips certification for security staff and purchasing an ID scanner. Mosquito said the back door had been locked on that date and emphasized that bartenders also share responsibility for checking IDs.
During discussion commissioners compared the incidents at Gateway and the tavern, cited neighborhood and college complaints, and moved to apply the same progressive discipline used for the Tavern on Merrimack: written warning (first offense); seven-day suspension (second); rollback of hours to 11:30 p.m. through April 30 for the third; and the possibility of closing the license for one year upon further violations. The clerk read the motion and the board voted in favor.
