Commissioners forward $29,000 corrections funding request to county council

Missy Baker (Speaker 6) told commissioners that the corrections 2025 grant exceeded its budget by $60,169.60 and that the department needs $29,000 to cover a shortfall primarily tied to benefits costs. Baker said the department was cut in the previous grant cycle and hopes to shift insurance and benefit costs to a user-fee fund in future years.
"We were cut $35,000 on the grant last year...I had to pay benefits out of that grant," Baker said, describing efforts to build a user-fee fund to cover recurring benefits in the future. Commissioners voted to forward a request to county council seeking $29,000 and asked council to determine the appropriate funding source.
The board approved sending the request and encouraged Baker to pursue unrestricted funding rather than restricted accounts if council determines that is necessary. The motion passed by voice vote; no roll-call tally was recorded.
