Summary
The San Juan Economic Development Corporation voted March 3 to contribute a $1,000 platinum sponsorship to the Keep San Juan Piñata 5K and approved multiple small-business mini grants and program awards. Board members approved the event sponsorship and a separate small-business grant after presentations from organizers and applicants.
The San Juan Economic Development Corporation voted March 3 to provide a $1,000 platinum sponsorship to the Keep San Juan Piñata 5K, an inaugural community fundraiser scheduled for May 30, 2026, and approved a set of small-business mini grants presented at the meeting.
Kelly Jimenez, identifying herself as representing the nonprofit Utah Beautiful, asked the board to sponsor the "Treat Someone Beautiful" event that will accompany the Piñata 5K to fund local beautification projects. "The funds raised will go directly to our community beautification projects in San Juan," Jimenez said, asking the EDC to underwrite event costs such as shirts, signage and safety needs in exchange for recognition and placement on promotional materials.
Board members and residents discussed the proposed route and sponsorship tiers, and a motion by Mr. Comperda, seconded by Mr. Lansdown, to approve a $1,000 platinum sponsorship was called and announced as passed by the president.
Separately, the board heard from a small-business applicant seeking grant support to update exterior signage and interior photos for a salon and training business that offers eyelash, nail and hair-extension courses. The applicant described nine years of local operation and said the requested funding would increase visibility and support job growth. A following motion to approve that small-business grant was moved by Mr. Mondo Latha and seconded by Mr. Bennett Comparera and was announced as approved.
The board also approved additional mini-grant items presented during the meeting, including a family-investment mini grant and consideration of a mini grant for Shalom Primary Care; the president called the related motions and announced the motions passed.
Votes at a glance: platinum sponsorship (motion by Comperda/second Lansdown) — approved; small-business grant (motion by Mondo Latha/second Bennett Comparera) — approved; mini-grant family investments — approved; Shalom Primary Care mini grant — presented for approval under the mini-grant program.
The meeting moved on after completing these agenda items and before discussing a proposed interest buy-down loan program.
