Summary
Placerville City Council proclaimed April'October 2026 as Wildfire Awareness Season and cosponsored the Fire Safe Council's Wildfire Safety Day May 2; residents urged stronger vegetation management after recent fires.
Placerville's City Council on March 24 declared April through October 2026 Wildfire Awareness Season and heard the Placerville Fire Safe Council's request to cosponsor the council's Wildfire Safety Day on May 2 at the Midtown Mall site.
Mayor Gottberg read the proclamation, which emphasized shared responsibility between residents, agencies and organizations to reduce wildfire risk and named the city's recent ordinances and county wildfire preparedness efforts as background for the designation. Mark Acuna, vice chair of the Placerville Fire Safe Council, outlined plans for the event, which will feature CAL FIRE demonstrations, 18 fire-related booths, animal rescue partners and activities for families.
The proclamation and the council's support aim to boost outreach and preparedness in a county that has suffered destructive wildfires in recent years. "Hope is not a strategy," resident Sue Rodman said during public comment, urging residents to take concrete actions to make properties fire safe.
Acuna told the council the event will highlight Firewise Community status and insurance credits that residents can claim; he also asked for continued council support for outreach and resource coordination. The council offered thanks and no objections were raised.
The council's action was procedural (presentation and recognition); the Fire Safe Council will proceed with event planning and city staff said they would coordinate logistical support.
Next steps: Fire Safe organizers will finalize event logistics for May 2 and the city will work with partner agencies on outreach and any required permits.
