Board shifts school start day from Aug. 6 to Aug. 7 because of Election Day

At the March 19 meeting the Bradley County School Board approved a small amendment to the 2026 academic calendar to avoid holding students on Election Day.
Terry Murray, filling in for Dana Yost, asked the board to shift the abbreviated August school-start day from Aug. 6 to Aug. 7 because Aug. 6 is an election day and the district preferred not to have students in schools that day. Murray also proposed moving the May 26 last day to May 27 to accommodate the shift; board members confirmed spring break dates and Memorial Day were unaffected.
Board members asked whether the change aligned with neighboring systems; staff said they coordinate with nearby districts when possible but sometimes calendars must differ. The motion to approve the academic-calendar amendment passed by roll call (7 yes, 0 no).
