Henderson redevelopment agency approves $5.5 million contribution for animal protection facility renovation

The Henderson Redevelopment Agency voted to increase its contribution to renovations at the city’s animal protection services facility to $5,500,000, agency staff said. The board approved an amended and restated funding agreement with the City of Henderson to help fund an estimated $7,000,000 remodel and expansion of the facility at 300 East Lake Mead Parkway.

Anthony Molloy, director of the redevelopment agency, told the board the agency previously approved a contribution of $3,245,604 on Sept. 17, 2024, and the amendment raises the agency’s share to $5,500,000. He said the project scope includes a quarantine space, an expanded medical area, new kennels and office space to house the office of public response.

Molloy said the existing facility was built in 1993 when Henderson’s population was about 95,701 and that as of Jan. 1, 2025 the city’s population was estimated at 359,059, which he cited to explain increased demand for services. He also stated that statutory restrictions limit certain uses of redevelopment agency funds and that the funds in this agreement will be confined to physical improvements to the facility.

The board voted to approve the amended funding agreement. The meeting record announces that all members voted in favor; the motion was reported as made by member Larson in the meeting’s vote narration.

Next steps outlined by staff include executing the amended agreement and moving forward with design and construction phases; the board did not take further public testimony on the item at the meeting.
