Council highlights free smoke-alarm installation program; fire department lists phone number and remaining grant-funded alarms

Council Member Lynch used a district report to promote a free smoke-alarm installation program operated by the Lexington fire department and encouraged District 2 neighbors to participate.
A fire department representative said, "If you call the number, (859) 231-5662, you can set up an appointment. We come out to your house. We bring the alarms. We do the install. It takes 5 to 10 minutes... and it's all totally free." The representative said the department received a federal grant of $25,000 for installations in the Georgetown Corridor and that about 75-76 alarms remain to be installed under that grant.
The installation targets one alarm in every bedroom, one outside each sleeping area and one on every level if the home were built to current codes. The department said installations are quick and typically done by two staff in a pickup or van.
Residents in the Georgetown Corridor were urged to call to schedule an appointment; the council did not take additional action during the meeting.
