Vice Mayor Wu announced at the Feb. 26 Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council meeting that the city is coordinating a new wave of medical-debt relief that will erase $5,600,000 in unpaid medical bills for more than 3,200 local residents.
“We are wiping out $5,600,000 of unpaid debt for over 3,200 Fayette County residents,” Vice Mayor Wu said, announcing the effort and crediting a partnership with a national nonprofit working on medical-debt relief. He added that to date the city’s efforts have helped relieve about $18,000,000 of debt for nearly 10,000 Fayette County residents.
Why it matters: medical-debt relief can reduce financial strain on households facing unpaid health-related bills and may improve household economic stability. The vice mayor said the city will continue outreach so residents who received notification can confirm eligibility and claim relief.
What’s next: Vice Mayor Wu asked residents to retain any letters they receive and to expect continued outreach; the council did not take separate action on the announcement during this meeting.
Attribution note: remarks were delivered on the council floor by Vice Mayor Wu and were read for the public record during council announcements.
