Alliance, city and Tree Commission plan large giveaways and plantings; volunteers sought

Representatives from the Alliance for Cape Fear Trees told the Commission on Nov. 19 that the Alliance will hold a two-day giveaway at Legion Stadium on Friday, Dec. 5 (noon'5 p.m.) and Saturday, Dec. 6 (9 a.m. until supplies last). Isabelle Shepherd said the Alliance expects to give away about 1,400 native trees and asked Commission members to publicize the event and volunteer.
Isabelle and other staff also outlined upcoming plantings: a Jan. 10 street-tree planting in Wilmington's North Side that organizers expect will put more than 100 trees in the ground, and a recent grant to plant 35 street trees at partner sites. She said a planting at Olsen Park funded by Pathfinder Wealth Consulting added 25 trees this season, and the Alliance supported a distribution of 800 trees in Leland earlier in the year.
Commissioners discussed volunteer logistics: members were asked to sign up, and Rhonda Waterhouse recommended having one event lead to track volunteer attendance and hours so the city can document Commission participation. Communications staff said the city will support outreach and produce a short video at the Dec. 5 giveaway to highlight the partnership.
The Commission also discussed three micro-forest pilot installations in partnership with local schools and community groups; Friends School of Wilmington and a Montessori site were cited as first installation locations, with tree stewards and volunteers assisting with seed collection, propagation and mulch-intensive site preparation. Isabelle reported 33 tree stewards graduated in October and that the city provided mulch for the micro-forest prep.
Members asked staff to circulate volunteer sign-up information and species lists; staff said the Alliance's website lists available species for the giveaways and will share sign-up details with Commission members.
