Lexington’s Green Check program offers free sustainability certification to local businesses

"Green Check started in 2016. We've had more than 80 businesses participate," Balding said, summarizing the program’s outreach and structure. She described a 10-category scorecard covering awareness and education, transportation efficiency, energy and water conservation, water quality, sustainable purchasing and innovation.
Participants receive an initial review and recommendations for "low-hanging fruit" improvements; they then have six months to raise their scores and qualify for bronze, silver or gold levels based on percentage points earned. Balding said McConnell Springs is certified at the silver level and highlighted on-site measures—bottle filling stations, motion-activated restroom lighting, bike racks and pollinator plantings—as examples of practical steps businesses and facilities can take.
