Sen. Marybeth Caroza presented Senate Bill 508 as a local-update measure to bring the Somerset County Board of Education into alignment with common Maryland county practices and the Open Meetings Act. Caroza said the bill would let county commissioners appoint a qualified person to fill a board vacancy for the remainder of a term, add two student members (one from each public high school) and adjust board compensation to be consistent with neighboring counties.
Caroza noted the House cross-file unanimously passed the committee and the House floor and said the bill also creates statutory authority for student representation. She asked the Ways and Means Committee for a favorable report to finalize statutory changes for Somerset County.
