The Nelson County Board of Supervisors approved a $22,000 temporary supplement for the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office to cover staffing while the attorney is activated for service.
The Commonwealth's Attorney (speaker 2) told the board he will be out of the area April 1 through Sept. 30 and requested funds to increase hours for a part-time employee and have two full-time prosecutors pick up extra caseload. "I'm seeking the Compensation Board like I did in 2023 when I was activated to be fully reimbursed," he said, but he cautioned that reimbursement is not guaranteed.
Why it matters: County officials said the funding is intended to maintain prosecutorial capacity while the attorney is on leave and to avoid backlogs. The presenter said the request covers three months in the current fiscal year and three months in the next.
Board action: Supervisor (speaker 6) moved to approve funding beginning April 1, 2026, in the amount of $22,000; Supervisor (speaker 3) seconded and the board approved the motion by voice vote. The board did not record a roll-call tally in the meeting transcript.
