Residents urge trail safety upgrades and ask about school-zone cameras

Several residents used the Matters from Citizens portion of the agenda to raise public-safety concerns and ask procedural questions about surveillance cameras.

Sarah Wolf complimented a local florist and urged residents to shop locally. Omar Caslano told commissioners he has observed high speeds on the trail and described a near‑serious crash; he asked the city to study trail safety, consider illuminated LED stop signs, perform a traffic or time study near the recently approved packing-plant site, and evaluate No Parking signs between the trail and adjacent streets. "Maybe you guys can do a time study and and or a traffic study and see if… we could use a couple of things there," he said.

Phil Baker asked whether new cameras at Maxey and in front of Dillard Street Elementary are city cameras or run by an outside vendor, and raised concerns about third-party firms sharing data with other agencies. City staff responded that the city contracts with a vendor who houses the data and that public-records requests would be the avenue for outside access; staff also affirmed the posted school-zone signage at one site but said flashing lights could be considered.

Why it matters: trail safety measures and school-zone visibility affect everyday pedestrian and bicyclist safety. Residents requested studies and low-cost interventions (LED-enhanced signage, No Parking zones) that the commission can direct staff to evaluate.

Next steps: staff did not give specific deadlines but received requests to examine trail stop-sign visibility, parking near event sites and traffic near the packing-plant redevelopment; commissioners did not adopt directives on the record during the meeting.
