Brunswick High students, staff honored after state and regional theater wins

The Glynn County School Board on March 10 recognized Brunswick High School students and staff for a string of theater awards that included a state-level win and a second-place finish at the Southeastern Theater Conference in Chattanooga.

Miss Johnson, who introduced the spotlight, told the board the production had "made history by winning at the Georgia Theater Conference," and that the team advanced to represent the state at the regional competition. "This victory marks the first time ever that a production from Glynn County Schools has taken the top honor at the state level competition," she said.

Lucy Bryson, Brunswick High's theater teacher and 1-act coach, described the students' run this season. "We won second place," Bryson said. She listed honors the cast received: an outstanding-ensemble award, a judge's-choice award for ensemble work, multiple best-supporting-actor awards and all-star recognitions for the main cast. "I could not be more proud of how we placed at the Southeastern Theater Conference in Chattanooga," she said.

Bryson also said junior and senior students had the opportunity to audition for colleges during the festivals, and that several schools had expressed recruiting interest in performers. "They are now being pursued and recruited by those colleges," she said, noting interest ranged from regional programs to some New York colleges.

Board members and attendees congratulated the cast and invited them forward for photos. Miss Johnson presented certificates of appreciation and thanked the students and staff for their work on the production.
