Fort Pierce approves police wage reopener; raises processed retroactive to Oct. 1

The Fort Pierce City Commission approved wage reopener agreements negotiated with the Coastal Florida Police Benevolent Association covering sergeants and lieutenants and companion agreements affecting officers. HR manager Jared Sorens told the commission the bargaining is complete and described the deal as a combination of step increases and a wage reopener.
"When we negotiated a contract, we had a wage opener for each year of the contract. This is the wage opener for this year," Jared Sorens said, explaining that the agreements were negotiated at the table with union representatives and would be implemented in payroll. He said the increases are retroactive to Oct. 1 and that payroll processing would reflect the changes on the Jan. 23 pay date.
Said Sorens: "So now they're gonna be moved up to the next step, but also the step has actually been increased. In some cases, some people will see a 14% increase." Commissioners asked staff to confirm details and timing; staff confirmed negotiations are completed, the increases are being processed, and retroactive payments will be included once approvals are final.
The commission voted unanimously to approve the wage-reopener provisions for the contract term noted in the agenda (October 1, retroactive start) and authorized implementation steps so payroll can process the retroactive adjustments.
