Germantown proclaims Arbor Day and recognizes teacher, student awardees

The Germantown Board of Mayor and Aldermen used part of its Feb. 23, 2026 meeting to honor local educators and students and to proclaim Arbor Day.
Alderman Hicks, liaison to the Germantown Education Commission, presented the February Teacher of the Month award to Charley Miller, a fifth‑grade science and social‑studies teacher at Farmington Elementary School. The commission highlighted Miller’s integration of literacy into content lessons, sponsorship of the K Kids Club, tutoring, and organization of the fifth‑grade trip to Washington, D.C.
A family member addressed the board to commend Miller’s empathy and consistent support for students facing family hardship.
The board also presented the February Youth Excellence Award to Casey Jang, a senior at St. Mary’s Episcopal School, noting her academic record (including numerous honors and AP coursework), leadership roles and volunteer work with local hospitals and the West Cancer Center and Research Institute.
Alderman Sanders read the city’s Arbor Day proclamation, noting Germantown’s tree inventory work, Oak Lawn Garden’s designation as a level‑3 arboretum, the city’s Tree City USA recognition and a free dogwood sapling giveaway from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, March 6 at the Germantown Crossing shopping center. "We encourage all citizens to celebrate Arbor Day in Germantown and to support the efforts to protect our trees and woodlands," Alderman Sanders read from the proclamation.
The recognitions and proclamation required no formal vote; the meeting then moved on to the consent agenda and the regular ordinance item before adjourning.
The board thanked staff and volunteers and noted that photos would be taken in People Street following the meeting.
