Houston County approves $4.85 million paving contract and a series of road maintenance bids

Highway staff described the AP/SAP paving project covering County Road 7 and County Road 18 and said one bid was received from Dunne Black Topping at $4,849,000; staff said the project will be paid with county state aid funds rather than local levy dollars. "This is our paving project for this year," highway staff said, explaining the routes and funding source.
The board also approved a $381,242.12 low bid from Brooding Rock Products for aggregate shouldering (two bids received), accepted quotes for annual aggregate stockpiles (CP 2026‑20) and equipment rental (CP 2026‑03) to allow selection of low‑price contractors when projects arise, and accepted a $131,600 quote from Farner Asphalt Sealers LLC for crack filling (CP 2026‑04).
For seal coating work, the board accepted a $503,789.01 low bid from Scott Construction, roughly $50,000 below the engineer's estimate; highway staff said contract provisions will require a contractor to correct striping or other defects. Staff also recommended buying a replacement sign‑cutter from TrafTech for $8,475 because the county's existing cutter is 26 years old and parts are no longer available; staff said funds are available to cover the purchase though it was not in the original budget.
All of the highway‑related items were approved by voice vote. Highway staff said the county alternates shouldering and surfacing work and that the aggregate quotes and equipment rental lists help the county respond quickly to projects and emergencies.
