Recreation superintendent: memberships surge, Unity Trail bench event and indoor-playground planning

Julie Dorsak, the city's recreation superintendent, told the commission the community center is "very busy" and reported membership growth and several programming and facility initiatives.
Dorsak said membership sales and renewals rose from 223 in January last year to 526 from Jan. 1 through Feb. 3 this year. "So far as of from January 1 through February 3, we had 526," she said, crediting an influx of SilverSneakers participants and changes in insurance-provider program availability elsewhere.
To meet demand, staff added a Tuesday SilverSneakers yoga class beginning Feb. 1 and plan to continue additional classes through April while attendance remains high. Dorsak also described new lobby furniture, and said staff will renovate the kitchenette in Community Room 1 and the senior-center kitchen in Community Room 2; construction is scheduled March 17 through about April 4.
Dorsak said the summer program brochure will go to the printer next week and go live March 12. Staff are training on Findlay Sports software to manage programming and are actively planning an indoor playground (marketing, signage and fee structure under discussion). She also showcased two of seven Unity Trail artistic benches that the city will host and invited residents to a community mosaic session on Saturday, Feb. 28, from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. in Community Room 1 to help build the bench mosaics; installations are expected in May.
Dorsak said staff are coordinating with the school district and police on winter events and will assess weather impacts on scheduled programs. She said she will report back next month on SilverSneakers attendance and other program metrics.
